The Infiniti brand was introduced to the US in 1989 as a Japanese auto luxury brand created to compete against the more noted German luxury brands of Mercedes, BMW and Audi.  Similar to BMW they focus more on the driving experience and from day one their performance and value proposition has been a hit and the M37 certainly delivers on that formula.  While I find their naming conventions to be confusing because they seem to change them every few years with M, G, QX and Qs but their M37 is targeted squarely at the BMW 5 Series.

Their M Series was recently replaced by what is now their Q Series but it is essentially the same car with updates and improvements to the body and overall performance. In 2014 M Series cars were replaced with what is now the Q Series.

For: This car doesn’t differ much from the current body style which is the Q Series and only a car geek would know the difference. Produced in lower volume when compared to their entry level G Series sedan and Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series you won’t find as many on the road therefore giving you dare I say a bit of exclusivity with this Infiniti. This car delivers a good driving experience with a healthy dosage of horsepower and handling making it fun to drive. Infiniti delivers on the formula of value and performance. It should also deliver that legendary Japanese reliability and probably can be maintained from the Nissan parts bin. You should be able to exceed 100,000 miles on the odometer with minimum maintenance when compared to it’s German counterparts.

Against: Styling of this car is polarizing. People either love it or hate it.  The base model isn’t sexy and many could argue at this price point both BMW, Mercedes and Audi preowned sedans deliver better luxury cache. In other words, this car can come off as rather boring if it isn’t dressed up. Dressed up defined as sport package with the right exterior trim and larger wheels.

Single Poor Man POV: If you truly need a sedan and want value this one delivers on that.

Married Poor Man POV: Four doors and over 300 horsepower delivered with automatic transmission, seats four adults, fits a child car seat, large number of vehicles with affordable pricing make it an easy sell to the Mrs. and she could also drive it if that means she will sign off on the purchase.

Divorced Poor Man POV: One of the most affordable mid-sized preowned luxury sedans on the market.  It should allow you to meet your financial commitments and if you have kids the back seat is accommodating.  Your bank account will be pleased with the added value of a touch of luxury and performance.

Curb Appeal: 7 out of 10…if you get the sport package…subtract a point if you don’t

Bottom Line: Good car for the money and there are plenty littered across dealer lots that should allow you to find great deals.  Don’t be tempted to buy any with asking prices that start in the mid teens as they all have odometer readings in excess of 100,000 miles and will be in need of a major repair sooner than later.  If you are patient in your search you should be able to find one with average mileage for a five year old car and most likely score it for somewhere in the low twenty grand price range.

If you are more of a performance geek there are certainly aftermarket applications that will allow you to modify to your desired level or needs.  Throw some aftermarket wheels on and you’d truly have a unique look and something different from the standard BMWs and Audis of the world.  These cars are very reliable and capable of delivering odometer readings that could approach 200,000 miles if regularly cared for.  Luxury, performance and a tad bit of exclusivity for a similar price of a comparable German model with money left over for modifications. That’s something to think about.
