The four-door coupe concept is all the rage and BMW wanted to be certain they got in on this trend so the Grand Coupe was born!  Like all other BMW sedans there can’t just be one so their entry-level version is the 640 but don’t fret, as this isn’t some wimpy four cylinder driven sedan. Or is it a coupe?

Just to be clear for those not familiar with the Grand Coupe it is a four-door sedan. BMW designers developed the styling so that despite the car having four doors it’s silhouette gives the illusion of a coupe.  This styling exercise is certainly not the first as Mercedes, Audi, VW, Porsche and Aston Martin all have sedans styled in the same manner. I must say of the previously mentioned marques BMW is certainly one of the better looking ones and there are many that argue it is the best looking one so it’s not in a bad place.

The Grand Coupe is in the same family as BMW’s 5 Series so while the styling might be new to BMW all the other components that make this car are not and that’s not a bad thing.  This is not a small car as it is longer than a 5 Series but shorter than a 7 Series and seats four adults. You get all the luxury accouterments you’d expect and it’s more of driver’s car.

The model year 2013 is the first year for this car and when it launched it wasn’t cheap. The base model of the Grand Coupe has always been more expensive than the base model of the 5 Series. This car had an MSRP of $77,000.00 and needed options so nicely equipped it could easily approach $100,000.00, which seems crazy to me for a fancy 5 Series. There’s no need to worry in 2016 because depreciation is your friend!  Today this is still the current body style and asking prices now start at as low as $38,000.00 for a vehicle with 50,000 miles on it and $50,000.00 for one with low to average miles.

MSRP Range New: $77,000.00

PMPR (Poor Man Price Range): $40,000.00

Current Min Savings Against MSRP New: 48%

Current Body Style: Yes BUT body style evolution change within 18 months

Total Listed Nationally: 53

For: This is a great looking car, drives well and represents good value at today’s prices.  It’s also not as common as the others in its class so for those looking for some sort of exclusivity this could be appealing. I am still not sure how well it’s styling will age and if I were playing it safe the 5 Series would still get consideration.

Against: BMW just announced the launch of the latest new 5 Series sedan of which this vehicle is based so it is likely the next generation of this car is on its way. This means a couple of things like accelerated depreciation now that the new body style or next generation is soon to be announced and you won’t be driving the current body style. The latter point matters to some and to others they are still driving a great looking BMW and that’s all that matters.

Single Poor Man POV: Coupe like lines, great looking and still functional back seats. It’s more rare than it’s 5 Series cousin giving you a slight sense of exclusivity.

Married Poor Man POV: Coupe like lines but with four doors make this a great case in practicality which would be a good point if you’ve got to sell the wife. It’s also easy for her to drive if that becomes a factor into getting her buy in, as this isn’t a massive sedan. It also drives smaller than it’s size.

Divorced Poor Man POV: If you’ve got kids this is a cool car with coupe like lines and a usable back seat while also being fun to drive. Cooler than a 5 Series and you’ll certainly get style points on date nights. Affordable German luxury and you probably need it with alimony and/or child support payments.

Curb Appeal: 8 with the sport package, and potentially a 9 with the right aftermarket 20” wheels.

Bottom Line: This is a stylish trendy four-door coupe look that works well. It’s produced in lesser numbers than it’s 5 Series cousin giving you some air of exclusivity. It’s not flashy unless you consider having a BMW flashy and even with its replacement on the way it will still look modern.  It’s a sports sedan and it will always be fun to drive.
